Profit and Loss Calculation for Electronic Payment Method

This help page provides guidance on how to handle profit and loss calculations for electronic payment method.

cryptact implemented an update on February 26, 2026 regarding the calculation for electronic payment method.
Please note that this calculation method applies only when the reporting currency is Japanese Yen (JPY).

Profit and Loss Calculation for Electronic Payment Method

For electronic payment method, when there is a difference between the face value (1JPY or 1USD) and the transaction price at the time of purchase or sale, the difference will be recognized as profit or loss at the time of the transaction.

For JPY-denominated electronic payment method

JPY-denominated electronic payment instruments

For foreign currency-denominated electronic payment method

foreign currency-denominated electronic payment instruments

With respect to foreign currency-denominated electronic payment method, as there are currently no clear official guidelines regarding the calculation of foreign exchange gains and losses, cryptact will calculate the average acquisition cost using the method selected by the customer (Periodic Average Cost or Average Cost), consistent with the treatment of crypto assets.

You can check the gains or losses from face value differences on the transaction detail screen. We plan to update the system to display the total gains or losses from face value differences alone in the future.

The basis of the calculation

This update has been implemented in consultation with our tax advisor and with reference to the National Tax Agency (NTA) guidance titled:
“Tax Treatment and Calculation Methods for Crypto Assets, etc.” (Japanese only)
Section 3-2-1: Tax Treatment at the Time of Acquisition of Electronic Payment Method.

Fee Calculation

Please refer to the section on electronic payment method under “Fee handling” in the help page Calculation Methods.

Applicable Assets

  • JPYC
  • USDC (applicable to transactions on or after March 4, 2025, when it was registered as an electronic payment method)
  • RLUSD (applicable to transactions on or after June 24, 2026)
  • JPYSC (applicable to transactions on or after June 24, 2026)

The scope is determined based on the list of electronic payment instruments published by the Japan Virtual and Crypto Assets Exchange Association (JVCEA). Any newly added eligible assets will be treated in the same manner going forward.

Price Reference

In some cases, such as BONUS, staking rewards, or crypto-to-crypto exchanges, cryptact automatically references its price data to calculate gains and losses. In these cases, electronic payment methods are treated uniformly as follows.

JPY-denominated electronic payment method: 1 JPY
Foreign currency-denominated electronic payment method: 1 USD (the USD/JPY exchange rate is used to calculate the average acquisition cost and gains or losses)
